The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) have added a new section to the list of competing categories. This year, the artists will be competing on “Best Metaverse Performance” And get the coveted prize. The awards program began in 1984 as a prestigious recognition of music video virtuosity. Past VMA winners include notable music artists, including MadonnaAnd the Nirvana And the Kanye West.
Typical award categories are Video of the year“, “Artist of the Year” And the “Song of the Year”, although there is a Web3 evolution in this edition. The VMAs took performance in the Metaverse into account and created a new award category.

Around “Rift Tour”with Ariana Grande (Fortnite)And the “default” by Blackpink (PUBG Mobile)And the BTS (Youtube), Charlie XCX (Roblox)And the Justin Bieber – Interactive Virtual Experience (board) And the “The Twenty One Pilots Concert Experience” (Roblox).
In addition to the new award category, the show announced its first Metaverse experience on August 12. Last week, Paramount Game Studios released their VMA take on the Roblox metaverse, available through September 3 of this year.
Roblox has two performance nominations and is a very active virtual world when it comes to pop culture events, such as concerts and festivals. Last year, it partnered with Insomniac, a leading producer of electronic dance music festivals, to create virtual festivals in its universe.
This year’s metaverse comes after five consecutive years of declining VMA viewership. As the metaverse continues to expand and attract a younger audience, MTV’s move to include virtual shows may help keep it fresh.

Artists are issuing individual songs as non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, which can now chart internationally, while others are using blockchain to improve music licensing.
